Ten years ago, I got one of those job offers that rarely comes along for an author – would I like to write a novel featuring one of the most iconic action heroes of the modern era, none other than 24’s Jack Bauer?
It was a tough call to make; it wasn’t that I didn’t want the job, far from it! But at the time my availability was extremely limited, and I feared I wouldn’t be able to do the work… Which is kind of ironic, given that the 24 series is all about the protagonists dealing with a ticking clock! Rather than turn down the chance to tell a Jack Bauer story, I decided to embrace the pressure and use that impetus to drive my writing. I knew I had a tight deadline… And suddenly I had the title for my book!
The last TV series outing for Jack Bauer was 2014’s 24: Live Another Day miniseries, but I had the brief to set my novel 24: Deadline exactly one hour after the end of the previous season, to bridge the gap between the last turbulent day of Jack’s life and his new adventure…
The time is 5:00 PM.
One hour ago, federal agent Jack Bauer was declared a fugitive. If he wants to survive, he must get out of the country, and he doesn’t have much time.
With his former colleagues in the Counter Terrorist Unit now dead, under arrest, or shut down, Jack has no resources to call upon, no back-up, and nowhere to go; only his determination can drive him on. One thing remains clear to him: the promise he made to his daughter Kim. Jack vows that he will see Kim one last time to tell her he loves her, before he drops off the radar forever.
Meanwhile, a hastily-assembled FBI task force sets out to track down and capture Jack, even as a covert operations unit of Russia’s SVR sets out to do the same – only the remit of the Russians is to kill on sight. As the clock runs down, Jack must face old friends and past enemies in a desperate race to stay one step ahead of the hunters, leaving them with a grim warning – Stay out of my way, and I’ll be gone within 24 hours. You’ll never see me again. Come after me…and you’ll regret it.
24: Deadline was the first in a new trilogy of Jack Bauer novels, followed by David Mack’s 24: Rogue and Dayton Ward’s 24: Trial By Fire, and it was my first shot at writing a high-speed, action-packed thriller narrative. As a fan of 24 from the very first series, I drew on my knowledge of the show to fold the race-and-chase plotline into elements from previous seasons, writing a novel that would appeal to both long-time 24 devotees and readers new to the series.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 24: Deadline’s publication, I’m giving away 3 signed and personalized copies of the novel to members of my Reader’s Club, chosen by random draw!
