This month Bleeding Edge hits hard, releasing on XBox One, Windows 10 and Steam platforms! This dynamic, high-impact arena fighting game is the newest release from innovative developer Ninja Theory, and I worked with them to create and write for their colourful cast of characters…
I’ve previously had great fun working with the Ninjas on downloadable content for Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a DC Comics superhero game (which sadly got cancelled) and figures and playsets for Disney Infinity 3.0‘s Star Wars saga releases – so when creative director Rhani Tucker invited me back to work on Bleeding Edge, I jumped at the chance.
Bleeding Edge is a 4 x 4 “team-up fighter” game in the spirit of Overwatch, Splatoon or Apex Legends, fusing hand-to-hand and ranged combo mechanics in a 3rd person action framework. Set in a near future where wild cybernetic augmentations enable fighters to unleash amazing attacks, the game pits a cast of 12 emblematic characters against one another in fast-paced battles.
Each character can be modified to create a unique load-outs for your personal play style, and custom cosmetics that reflect your future-fashion sense; among the unique heroes are street samurai and graffiti artist Daemon; New Zealand’s own rollerball troublemaker Makutu; hacker extraordinary ZeroCool; pensioner and techno-witch Maeve; biker-babe and Southern wrecking belle Buttercup; and my personal favourite, the dolphin-tank hybrid Mekko.

Bleeding Edge was my first experience of working on a “fighter” game, and I loved the crazy cyberpunk designs of the characters! Part of the fun of this project was getting to create histories and narratives for these personas and bring them to life, and writing dialogue scripts for the actors who play them. I’m looking forward to seeing a world of gamers getting to grips with them all…
