Writng fiction based in existing universe (also known as an “IP” or “intellectual property”) might sound like an easy gig for an author, but in reality there’s a whole lot more work in it than you may expect. Tie-in writers face a unique challenge – we have to create original, compelling stories about characters and settings that have been invented by other creators, all the while adhering to whatever rules, themes and tones that IP may be built upon.
But it’s also a great opportunity to visit worlds with rich histories and passionate fan-bases, to craft new stories and add to the great tapestries of these other worlds. Writing tie-ins, I’ve been lucky enough to tell tales featuring heroes like Jack Bauer, James T. Kirk, the Doctor and Judge Dredd; I’ve written epics in the grim dark future of the 41st Millennium and adventures across the Pegasus Galaxy, the red sands of Mars and more.
My first tie-ins were set in the world of 2000AD‘s Judge Dredd and Warhammer 40,000, and more recent works include stories set in the worlds of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Gerry Anderson’s Space: 1999 and UFO, the mythic Horus Heresy saga, Watch Dogs, the Halo universe, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard.
